Why Rampage

The founders of the Routemaster Rampage are former Charity Ralliers who drove the London to Mongolia route in Suzuki SJ 410’s in 2005 on the Mongol Rally. Described as the “greatest experience in the world” by the organisers of the Mongol Rally, its veterans inevitably are in search of a new rally and one that is all for charity.

Once you have proved that you can drive a twenty year old car over 8,500 miles of difficult terrain, it is time to move on to something bigger and more difficult.

The advantage of a Routemaster over other vehicles - including overland buses typically used for these journeys - is the relative comfort that it affords. Unlike cars, trucks, or single deck buses, a Routemaster’s twin decks ensures that the time spent driving between the various destinations on the Rampage is enjoyable and entertaining - with great views from an upper deck, the possibility of an open roof to tan and sightsee, the ability to move around or lie down, and to chill out with the other Rampagers. Other advantages include the ability to move non-stop between destinations, lowering the overall journey time so that more time can be spent enjoying the stops, and the lower overall cost, given the sharing of the cost burden between all the Rampagers on the Routemaster.

The Routemaster Rampage is not an original idea in any sense, nor is it claimed to be - people have been racing rallies, and driving across the world in cars, trucks, buses and Routemasters for years. The route from London to Capetown was most recently driven in a Routemaster in 2004. Nevertheless, the experience should be a great one for Mongol Ralliers and others seeking a new adventure.
